Somatic Release Exercises for Stress, Anxiety and Trauma

What are somatic release exercises?

Somatic release exercises are a series of easy-to-follow movements ( such as stretches and simple yoga poses) that target specific muscles and areas of our body that hold on to negative emotions and experiences.

What Part of the Body is targeted?

These exercises focus on the center of our body from the inner thighs up through the pelvis, up along the spine to the shoulders and neck. The exercises also target the psoas muscle, which connects from the lower lumbar spine through the pelvis to the femur. It plays a key role in hip flexion, posture, and stabilizing the lower spine.
During prolonged periods of stress, our psoas muscle is constantly contracted, which can signal to our body to protect itself by contracting and going into a defensive posture to protect the body from harm. The psoas muscle holds our physical, emotional, and mental stresses we carry in our body over the course of our life.

The circle of compassion is only complete when it also includes yourself.

How does it work?

The somatic exercises allow our bodies innate natural healing ability to release built up stress from the body, which can help reduce any physical and emotional distress we are carrying within us.

Through the exercises, we initiate the bodies innate, natural reflex mechanism of shaking that releases the stress from the body and helps the nervous system settle. The shaking mechanism is similar to how the body shivers when it is cold. Shivering is a natural bodily response as well as a way our body innately knows how to help us. The shaking helps reduce the rush of adrenaline we experience due to fear and the fight-flight part of our nervous system being activated as we encounter stressful or anxiety provoking situations.

Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts.
